PPSMI scraped

I just read in Malaysiakini that our government has decided to switch back to teaching Science and Mathematics in Bahasa Malaysia.
It will only start to implement in year 2012.
It will start of with Year 1 and Year4, Form 1 and Form 4.

I am happy I am not teaching any of that categories in year 2012 (keeping my fingers cross).
I got my promotion DG44 as Guru Akademik Tingkatan 6.
I received my letter of offer during the school holiday.
Though it sounds like a promotion, but actually there is no change in my salary.
I am receiving the same pay yet I have to work till 4pm.
I am accepting the offer because I enjoy teaching the upper form.
Now, I am more glad that I accept the offer.
I can still continue to teach in English.
Form 6 and matriculation will not involved in this change.

Actually, a lot of my colleagues enjoy to teach Science and Mathematics in English especially those teaching Form 6.
But I know that it is really tough for the lower secondary students to understand the subjects well in English.

I am teaching a class of Form 4 students.
All of them cannot master English well.
It makes my teaching miserable.
They cannot understand me in English.
I need to translate in Bahasa Malaysia.
But when I tend to do it every time, they take it for granted.
They will ignore my lesson in English and waiting for my translation instead.
Yet, they still cannot understand well in Bahasa Malaysia.
They actually prefer Melayu Sarawak, which I know nothing about it.
So, my communication with students is like chicken and duck,
鸡同鸭讲。

Anyway, there are pro and con in scraping off PPSMI.
I am sure this is going to be the hottest topic in the staffroom tomorrow.

i think tat is just a bad news for student. how they can command eng if they still insists what they want ?
over protection is not a suitable policy for youth to grow .

I just had a group discussion on this issue in my tutorial class this morning.

At first,I strongly think that Science and Maths should be taught in English as most of our Science and Maths references (in tertiary level) is in English. It would be better if they start young. And it's one of the way to make Malaysians to be more competitive globally.

However, after listening to all the arguments,I do not insist in teaching Science and Maths in English anymore. As you mention here,it has pros and cons.I just think that our government shouldn't have changed their policy so often. They should make up their mind and stick to one.If not, there will be more and more guinea pigs among our younger generation.Sigh.

So I've decided that it's the mentality that matters. It's not the language we use.Somehow.

P.S. I'm becoming more and more loso like the commentator above.*LOL*

Congrats on ur promo to 44!!! Whatever language makes no difference. Those who can, cab...those you cannot, just cannot! Teachers just taught in Chinese (or Foochow even) - even in Form 6 with the good students and not just Science and Maths! (And they stopped when I walked past!) Said easier for them to understand! I would say it was easier for them to teach...never mind that their students would die once exam came. They had the knowledge but in the wrong language!
